Today Panchangam or Panchang or Hindu Almanac is a sort of astrological diary, which gives out highly useful information about the movement and placement of celestial bodies like planets and stars. People who believe in Vedic Astrology, consult Today’s Panchang for all important occasions such as marriage, education, travel, business, interview, examination, etc. The Panchang literally means ‘five limbs’, which are –

1. Din (vaar) or Day of the Week

2. Tithi or the lunar day

3. Nakshatra or the Constellation

4.  Yoga

5.  Karan

These days, Online Panchang is also gaining popularity among the younger generation, not the least because of the convenience of consultation anywhere, anytime. Whether online or offline, Panchang is useful in locating astrologically favorable days after matching the position of planets with the planet positions in an individual’s astrological chart. the time between Sunrise and Sunset makes up for a day and not all days have the same impact on your life decisions. Astrologers and those who follow astrology believe that every day, every planet’s position brings a different timeline that may or may not be suitable for your life’s endeavors. Therefore, they seek guidance from this Vedic document for a comprehensive way of life.

Why follow Panchang

One of the basic laws of nature is “every action has an equal and opposite reaction.” Therefore, it is imperative to act in harmony with what the celestial bodies are doing so that whatever action you are going to take in life brings you the desired outcome. It stems from the five parts of Panchang -

1.  Din (vaar) or Day of the Week – The days of the week along with their ruling planets are known as ‘Din.’ Following are the planets and the days they rule – 1) Sunday (Sun); 2) Monday (Moon); 3) Tuesday (Mars); 4) Wednesday (Mercury); 5) Thursday (Jupiter); 6) Friday (Venus); 7) Saturday (Saturn).

2.  Tithi (Lunar day) – This is the day as per the Hindu lunar calendar. The Hindu lunar month contains 30 tithis. These 30 tithis are equally divided into a dark (Krishna Paksha) and a bright (Shukl Paksh). the Dark fortnight is the waning phase of the moon while the bright fortnight is the waxing phase of the moon. There are 5 types of tithis, which are useful in guiding different aspects of life –

·    Nana Tithi – brings joy and happiness

·    BhadraTithi – auspicious for starting new work

·    Jaya Tithi – favorable for conquering enemies

·    Rikta Tithi – avoidable date because it is not favorable for any significant work

·    Poorna Tithi – good to carry out all important jobs

3.  Nakshatra or the Constellation - The word literally means “that which doesn’t decay or destroy” and it represents the stellar constellations. Vedic astrology talks of 27 Nakshatras and their influence on the Rashis or zodiac signs are determined by the position of these Nakshatras. These 27 Nakshatras begin with the Ashwini Nakshatra in the Aries (Mesh) sign.

4.  Yoga – You can obtain a ‘Yog’ or Yoga from the sum of the Nirayana longitude of the Sun and the Moon, divided into 27 parts of 13°20' each. Similar to the Nakshatras, there are 27 yogas, which are - 1. Vishkumbha; 2. Priti; 3. Ayushman; 4. Saubhagya;  5. Shobhana; 6. Atiganda; 7. Sukarama; 8. Dhriti; 9. Shoola; 10. Ganda; 11. Vridhi; 12. Dhruva; 13. Vyaghata; 14. Harshana; 15. Vajra; 16. Sidhi; 17. Vyatipata; 18. Vriyana; 19. Paridhi; 20. Shiva; 21. Sidha; 22. Sadhya; 23. Shubha;  24. Shukla; 25. Brahma; 26. Indra; 27. Vaidhriti.

5.  Karan or Karna – Karna is half of Tithi and one Karna is completed when the Nirayana longitude of the Moon moves 6 degrees on that of the Sun. Each Tithi contains two Karnas and there are a total of 11 Karnas, four of which are Fixed Karnas - Kintughna, Chatushpada, Sakuni and Naga and Movable Karnas - Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija, and Vishti.
