Amavasya is more famously known as the new moon or the no moon day and happens once every lunar month. There are two halves to a month, namely Krishna and Shukla pakshas. Amavasya vrat occurs at the beginning of every month.

What is the Amavasya vrat dates for 2022?

The Amavasya which falls during September-October, is otherwise known as Pitru paksha or Ashwin Amavasya. This year, Phalguna Amavasya is dated to be on March 2, followed by the Chaitra Amavasya which falls on April 1.  On April 30th, Vaishakha Amavasya is observed while Jyeshtha Amavasya is observed on May 30. will fall on June 29 and Shravana Amavasya will June 29th is the day of Ashadh Amavasya, and July 28 is the day when Shravana amavasya is performed. Bhadrapada Amavasya will be observed on August 27 and Ashwina Amasvya will be on September 25 followed by Kartik Amavasya which will occur on October 25. We observe the Margashirsha Amavasya on November 23rd , and the Pausha Amavasya will fall on 23rd of December.  For fasting purposes, knowing the Amavasya vrat dates are important.

What are the reasons for Amavasya fast?

Amavasya is the day where your actual emotions, and leanings, and proclivities get enhanced, and you feel completely overcome emotionally and mentally. If you are anger predominant, you see an upsurge in violent emotions that day. If you are a sadhaka you will see your spiritual energy is elevated this day. Diwali is the only day that occurs on Amavasya and on this day, prayers and pujas are performed to get good progeny having no physical or mental afflictions. What is the importance of Amavasya?

Deceased ancestors are invoked and appeased through rituals, performed on the Amavasya day. It is not a day for new auspicious beginnings; rather it is earmarked for waging wars and fighting with enemies. Many sadhaks perform their sadhana on Amavasya, it is one of those days wherein, the puja that is done appeases devi. Karthik Amavasya is the only rare event in the Amavasya series that is auspicious.  It is believed that the departed souls visit their family on this day just to oversee their wellbeing. Praying to them on this day would remove the pitru dosha in our charts.  You can also meditate on this day so that healing energies reach them, and they will bless you from beyond for absolving them of their remining sins.  According to a boon by Lord Yama to Kunti Putra Karna, anyone who does tarpan, donates food, does charitable acts, absolves their ancestors from sins and they get the powerful blessings from them. What are the benefits of Amavasya fast?

Can you elaborate on the Amavasya vrat puja vidhi?

Devotees should wake up before dawn, bathe, and then do puja to Lord shiva or Vishnu. On these days, a visit to the temples, sanctifies the mind. Light the ghee lamp and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu. Anna dana done on this day, gives an effect equal to that of observing a full-term penance to God. Since the effect of Amavasya can be quite disturbing on our minds, we are advised to observe fast during the day or eating light food during night.  Tamasic foods like eggs should be totally avoided this day as they would result in ill health. Especially on the Bhadra Amavasya, wheat grain diet should be wholly avoided. Kartika Amavasya is the only Amavasya day that permits the devotee to celebrate and start new ventures etc. Amavasya vrat puja vidhi should be elaborately performed with devotion and sincerity.
