Amavasya is more famously known as the new moon or the no moon day and happens once every lunar month. There are two halves to a month, namely Krishna and Shukla pakshas. Amavasya vrat occurs at the beginning of every month.

The Amavasya which falls during September-October, is
otherwise known as Pitru paksha or Ashwin Amavasya. This year, Phalguna Amavasya
is dated to be on March 2, followed by the Chaitra Amavasya which falls on

rather it is earmarked for waging wars and fighting with enemies. Many sadhaks

is believed that the departed souls visit their family on this day just to

Devotees should wake up before dawn, bathe, and then do puja
to Lord shiva or Vishnu. On these days, a visit to the temples, sanctifies the
mind. Light the ghee lamp and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu. Anna dana done on
this day, gives an effect equal to that of observing a full-term penance to
God. Since the effect of Amavasya can be quite disturbing on our minds, we are
advised to observe fast during the day or eating light food during night. Tamasic foods like eggs should be totally
avoided this day as they would result in ill health. Especially on the Bhadra
Amavasya, wheat grain diet should be wholly avoided. Kartika Amavasya is the
only Amavasya day that permits the devotee to celebrate and start new ventures
